Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas is an American singer and songwriter who was born on October 13, 1980. She was initially found when she was a youngster, and in 2002, she was signed to Murder Inc. Records. She appeared on two of the biggest hit songs of 2002, Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” and Ja Rule’s “Always on Time,” both of which featured her. With “Foolish” and “What’s Luv?” at numbers one and two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list, respectively, she became the first female artist to hold the top two spots concurrently.

Early life

On October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York, Ashanti Douglas was born. Her father, Ken-Kaide Thomas Douglas, is likewise African-American and a former vocalist, as is her mother, Tina Douglas, a former dance instructor. She has a younger sister named Kenashia “Shia” Douglas and is the eldest of her parents’ four children. Ashanti’s mother gave daughter the name Ashanti in honor of the Ashanti Empire in Ghana, where women held positions of authority. Tina wanted Ashanti to emulate this. In the 1960s, her grandfather James worked with Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights activist.
