Barbara Joan “Barbra” Streisand, an American singer, actress, and director, was born on April 24, 1942. She has had a successful career spanning more than six decades in the entertainment industry and is one of the few performers to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT). Early in the 1960s, Streisand started her career by giving performances in Broadway theaters and nightclubs. Following her appearances as a television guest, she signed a record deal with Columbia Records. She insisted on keeping complete artistic control and accepted lower pay in exchange—a practice that persisted throughout her career—and her debut, The Barbra Streisand Album, which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1963, was released.

Diana Ida (née Rosen; 1908–2002) and Emanuel Streisand welcomed their daughter Streisand into the world on April 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York City. In her youth, her mother had been a soprano and had thought about going into music; instead, she ended up becoming a school secretary. They first met at the same high school where her father taught. The family of Streisand is Jewish. Her maternal grandparents came from the Russian Empire, where her grandfather had been a cantor, while her paternal grandparents left their native Galicia (modern-day Poland and Ukraine) in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Streisand began working at different low-paying jobs when she was 16 and on her own to supplement her money. She once went through a time where she had no fixed abode and ended up sleeping at friends’ houses or wherever she could set up the army cot she carried. She returned to her mother’s Brooklyn apartment when she was in need of a home-cooked lunch. However, according to biographer Karen Swenson, her mother was appalled by her daughter’s “gypsy-like lifestyle” and begged her once more to give up trying to break into the entertainment industry. However, Streisand took her mother’s pleas as even more motivation to keep trying: “My desires were strengthened by wanting to prove to my mother that I could be a star.”
Streisand has had two marriages. Actor Elliott Gould was the woman’s first husband, whom she wed on September 13, 1963. On February 12, 1969, they made their separation public, and on July 6, 1971, they became divorced. Jason Gould, their lone child, played her on-screen son in The Prince of Tides.

She has also received four inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
