Bob Dylan was born on May 24, 1941, in St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, to Robert Allen Zimmerman and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Range west of Lake Superior. Dylan’s paternal grandparents, Anna Kirghiz and Zigman Zimmerman, immigrated to the United States from Odesa in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine) following the pogroms against Jews in 1905. Florence and Ben Stone, his maternal grandparents, were Lithuanian Jews who immigrated to the United States in 1902. Dylan wrote in his autobiography, Chronicles: Volume One, that his paternal grandmother’s family was from the Kazman district of Kars Province in northeastern Turkey.
