Early life

Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Jacklyn (née Gise) and Theodore Jrgensen. Jeff’s mother was a 17-year-old high school student at the time of his birth, and his father was 19 years old. Jrgensen was a Danish American who was born in Chicago to a Baptist family. After finishing high school despite difficult circumstances, Jacklyn attended night school while carrying Jeff as a baby. Jeff began attending a Montessori school when he was two years old in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In April 1968, after his parents divorced, his mother married Cuban immigrant Miguel “Mike” Bezos. Mike adopted four-year-old Jeff shortly after the wedding, and his surname was legally changed from Jorgensen to Bezos.

Career

After graduating from college in 1986, Bezos was approached by Intel, Bell Labs, and Andersen Consulting, among others. He began his career at Fitel, a fintech telecommunications start-up, where he was tasked with developing an international trade network. Following that, Bezos was promoted to head of development and director of customer service. From 1988 to 1990, he moved into the banking industry as a product manager at Bankers Trust. In 1990, he joined D. E. Shaw & Co, a newly formed hedge fund with a strong emphasis on mathematical modeling, and stayed until 1994. At the age of 30, Bezos became D. E. Shaw’s fourth senior vice-president.
