Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of TDE, received some of her early recordings and was pleasantly impressed by its caliber. The two kept in touch, and in 2013, TDE stepped in to sign SZA, becoming the label’s first female artist, when her two EPs started to get attention. SZA “stole a bunch of beats off the Internet” to create her early music, which she recorded with her friends and neighbors. SZA’s first EP was independently published on October 29, 2012.
