Early life
Usher Raymond IV was born in Dallas, Texas on October 14, 1978. Jonetta Patton (née O’Neal; from Tennessee) and Usher Raymond III were his parents. He spent most of his childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Usher’s father abandoned the family when he was a year old. Usher was raised by his mother, stepfather, and half-brother James Lackey (born 1984). When he was nine years old, Usher joined the Chattanooga church youth choir, which was directed by his mother. His grandmother discovered his singing talent there, but it wasn’t until Usher joined a singing group that she thought he could sing professionally. Usher’s family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, believing that a larger city would provide more opportunities to showcase his talent.
Career
Usher joined the NuBeginnings, an R&B local quintet organized by local music promoter Darryl Wheeler, when he was ten years old. In 1991, Usher recorded ten songs with the group, and the resulting album, Nubeginning Featuring Usher Raymond IV, was only available regionally and by mail order. Patton, on the other hand, took him out because she had a “bad experience.” Hip-O Records reissued the album nationally in April 2002.
