Early life
Jeffery Lamar Williams was the tenth of eleven children born in Atlanta. He is from Sylvan Hills, an Atlanta (Zone 3) neighborhood, and grew up in the Jonesboro South projects. Other rappers from the area include Waka Flocka Flame, 2 Chainz, Ludacris, and Williams’ childhood friend PeeWee Longway, who lived four doors down from Williams. Young Thug has previously stated that he was expelled from sixth grade for breaking a teacher’s arm. He was sentenced to four years in juvenile prison.
Career
Young Thug made his musical debut in 2010 as a guest appearance on TruRoyal’s song “She Can Go.” Young Thug caught the attention of fellow Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane after releasing the first three installments of his mixtape series I Came from Nothing in 2011 and 2012. Gucci Mane went on to sign Young Thug to his label 1017 Brick Squad Records, an Asylum/Atlantic imprint, in 2013. Thug’s fourth mixtape, 1017 Thug, was released as his first project on the label.
